Sara Sara

Glacier-covered Sara Sara volcano lying between Laguna Parinacocha and the Río Ocona is the westernmost young volcano in Perú. The 5522-m-high andesitic stratovolcano was the source of youthful-looking lava flows with prominent levees that traveled about 10 km eastward into the Río Ocona valley. Pristine lava flows on the upper slopes of the volcano and ash layers in peat deposits at its base suggest a very young, probably Holocene age.
